2025 F1 Grand Prix of Great Britain — Results & aftermath

Norris prevails to take victory at Silverstone after painful Piastri penalty; Hulkenberg earns first podium after 239 starts in chaotic, rain-affected race

In a thrilling and chaotic British Grand Prix, McLaren’s Lando Norris kept it clean and composed to take victory ahead of teammate Oscar Piastri, who dominated the early part of the contest but made a pivotal mistake behind the Safety Car that led to a race-altering 10-second penalty. With heavy rains falling on Silverstone before the race start and more predicted for early in the GP, the field started the Formation Lap on Intermediate wet weather tires on a damp circuit. But Mercedes’ George Russell, Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, Haas’s Oliver Bearman, Kick Sauber’s Gabriel Bortoletto and Racing Bulls’ Isack Hadjar all dove to the pits to gamble on slick tires rather than line up on the grid despite the still quite wet final third of the circuit. With Red Bull’s Max Verstappen leading away from the pole, followed by Piastri in P2 and Norris just behind in P3, it didn’t take long for the first incident on a day full of them. The second Racing Bul of Liam Lawson tangled with Haas’s Esteban Ocon, sending the Aussie spinning off track and out of the race. A Virtual Safety Car was quickly deployed, and Mercedes also brought Kimi Antonelli in for a set of Hard Pirellis, with Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll also pitting to take Softs. But for some it was too soon for that maneuver, as even the slick-clad Bortoleto spun out into the gravel once the VSC ended on Lap 4, prompting another VSC just two laps later when his car stalled on track. Stroll pitted again for fresh Softs before the VSC ended during Lap 7, a key move for the Aston man that left teammate Fernando Alosno wondering why his side of the garage hadn’t executed the same tactic on the rapidly drying track.

No sooner did racing resume but the rain started to fall in earnest, with Antonelli diving to the pits on Lap 10 to get back on Inters and teammate Russell, Ferrari’s Leclerc and Stroll yet again, having made the most of his Softs to gain valuable track position, following for the same swap a lap later. Verstappen stayed out on his aging set of Inters, however, and promptly ran wide coming out of Chapel, allowing Norris to briefly take P2, with teammate Piastri diving in for fresh Inters. Norris and Verstappen followed Piastri in, with a slow stop by McLaren costing Norris the position and a clean one by Red Bull getting Verstappen out in P3, while Piastri had assumed the lead ahead of the yet-to-pit Williams of Alex Albon. With the rain really chucking it down and visibility terrible by Lap 13 of this 52-lap contest, a full Safety Car was deployed a lap later for the wellbeing of the drivers until the deluge could subside. The SC ended on Lap 17, and Piastri restarted ahead of Verstappen, Norris in P3, Stroll amazingly in P4 and Kick Sauber’s Nico Hulkenberg suddenly in P5 after an early stop for fresh Inters on Lap 9 paid off handsomely for the German veteran in then increasingly wet conditions thereafter. But a lap later there was yet another Safety Car deployed for the recovery of the crashed Racing Bull of Hadjar at Copse, having run into the back of Antonelli’s Silver Arrow in the blinding spray. While Antonelli came to the pits again for fresh Inters, the rear diffuser of his Mercedes was badly damaged and he would be forced to retire a few laps later.

With the Safety Car coming in on Lap 21, Piastri made the crucial error in judgment that destroyed his race. While controlling the restart from the front, the young Aussie braked far too hard to set up his getaway, nearly causing Verstappen to ram into the back of him such was his excessive deceleration. While Piastri then scooted away, the incident was almost immediately and ominously under review by the stewards. Piastri was eventually penalized 10-seconds for the excessive braking action, a backbreaker for his hopes of victory on the day. But Verstappen was unable to capitalize on this eventuality because he spun out in pursuit at the restart on Lap 21, dropping the Dutch Master all the way down to P10. This all redounded to Norris’s great benefit, because when the penalty was handed down and Piastri eventually had to pit for Medium tries on Lap 43 due to a now-finally drying track, Norris inherited P1 while his teammate sat stationary for that agonizingly slow 10-seconds before any work could be done on his car. So, despite coming in a lap later for his own set of Mediums, he still emerged with the lead of the race, such was the impact of Piastri’s penalty. Controlling the race from the front and with no more incidents to speak of, Norris was able to keep his teammate at bay and take an emotional victory at his home Grand Prix in front of of his adoring countrymen and women in the  grandstands. For Piastri, it was a doubly bitter pill to swallow, as he not only finished P2 in a race he likely should have won but also saw his points advantage to Norris in the Drivers’ Championship slip to just eight. Obviously unhappy with how the day transpired, Piastri will have a lot to stew on before the next race at the end of the month in Belgium, while Norris will be riding high with his confidence fully restored  in the interim after his dream victory here at Silverstone.

With his team’s strategy paying off beautifully, Hulkenberg made a crucial pass on Stroll for P3 and then held off the charging Ferrari of Lewis Hamilton easily to take P3 and his maiden pole in F1 after an astonishing 239 race starts. As the saying goes, better late than never and it was the feel good story of the whole day to see the veteran German pilot rewarded for his years of skillful and professional driving with teams of various quality. Hamilton slotted in at P4 at one of his favorite tracks, bettering by far his Scuderia stablemate Leclerc, who had a miserable day in the wet with a multitude of offs and came home well out of the points in P14. Verstappen managed to recover from his ill-timed spin somewhat to take P5 but it was still a day to forget for the normally flawless four-time champion after starting from the pole. It’s distinctly possible that the team’s decision to really trim the car out hurt him when he most needed downforce during the race, despite netting him the pole. Pierre Gasly had another fine drive for Alpine in P6 and Stroll’s early race tire gambles paid off for Aston Martin even if he faded bit on his final stint, still coming home a solid P7. Teammate Alonso took P9, with Williams’ Albon splitting them in P8, another impressive drive that flew somewhat under the radar amidst all the excitement. Russell took a lone solitary point in P10 after what turned out to be a pretty awful day for the Mercedes factory team. The Monday morning debrief at Brackley should be fairly brutal and they” be looking to get back on form at Spa in three weeks’ time.

The next race weekend doesn’t begin until July 25th, as team’s will have loads of time to prepare for the Belgian Grand Prix at the venerable Spa-Francorchamps circuit, including the added pressures of a Sprint weekend there. For Norris, it will mean more time to savor his dream win at his home Grand Prix. For Piastri, it will mean a long time between races to stew on his nightmare penalty and his own culpability for that. And for most of the other drivers, it will mean putting Britain in the rearview and starting fresh in Belgium — except for Hulkenberg, who will surely savor his career achievement and be looking to make it two podiums in a row. 2025 F1 Grand Prix of Great Britain — Qualifying results

Verstappen snatches pole from two McLarens with stunning final effort at Silverstone; Piastri settles for P2, Norris P3; Mercedes’ Russell solid in P4, as Ferrari fail to follow up on practice pace

After a disappointing race last week in Austria that saw his day end on Lap 1 due to a crash that was not his fault, Red Bull’s Max Verstappen rebounded big time during Saturday Qualifying for the British Grand Prix. Proving one again that he remains the sport’s most talented pilot even in a car no other driver seems to be able to come to grips with, Verstappen laid down a final flying lap in Q3 that vaulted him ahead of the McLarens of Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris and onto the pole for Sunday’s race. If they want to show what a perfect lap looks like at Silverstone in the future, they can simply replay the Flying Dutchman’s sublime effort, which looked smooth and effortless en route to a blistering 1:24.892 time. Contrast that with the other contenders’ final efforts, when they knew the pressure was on to produce and the track was at it’s best, and there were small mistakes aplenty, including from P2 Piastri, who Verstappen knocked off from the top spot, and McLaren teammate Lando Norris, who had to settle for P3 and the second row after getting just that little bit too aggressive over the kerbs of the tricky final sector.

Somewhat lost in all the excitement was another fine effort from Mercedes’ George Russell, who kept it clean enough for a solid P4 time, quite a bit better than teammate Kimi Antonelli’s P7. The Italian Silver Arrows’ rookie will also be demoted three grid spots from there due to the penalty accrued from his ill advised first-lap lurch at the Red Bull Ring last week that took out not only himself but also Verstappen. Ferrari disappointed somewhat after teasing legitimate pole speed throughout the practice sessions. The Prancing Horses receded a bit come crunch time and Lewis Hamilton could only work his way up to P5, with Charles Leclerc just behind in P6, both drivers having slightly scruffy last efforts in Q3. The Ferrari faithful will be hoping that somehow their race pace will be better tomorrow than the one-lap speed in relation to the other top teams today.

Haas’s Oliver Bearman showed both his brilliance by setting a super strong P8 time and also his rookie-ness by picking up a 10-spot grid penalty for hard charging the pit lane entrance under Red Flag conditions at the end of Practice 3. Fernando Alonso got the most from his recently upgraded Aston Martin with the ninth fastest time and Alpine’s Pierre Gasly also did yeoman’s work to make it into Q3 even if he could not improve on P10.

2025 F1 Grand Prix of Austria — Qualifying results

Norris claims pole at Red Bull ring ahead of P2 Leclerc, teammate Piastri in P3

Looking to rebound from the clash with his teammate that ended his race in Canada prematurely two weeks ago, McLaren’s Lando Norris blistered the field to earn pole during Saturday Qualifying for the Austrian Grand Prix. Norris mastered the short and tricky Red Bull ring to the tune of a record-setting 1:03.971 fast lap, half a second ahead of Charles Leclerc’s Ferrari and a few tenths more than that versus McLaren stablemate and current points leader Oscar Piastri. After the the Papaya duo collided late in the race in Quebec a fortnight ago, costing Norris any points at all and nearly taking out Piastri as well in the process, Lando will be desperate to get away and stay away from all of the other contenders, run a clean race and take home maximum points to reignite his championship aspirations. With Leclerc’s Prancing Horse slotting in at P2 and teammate Lewis Hamilton pulling one out of the bag good enough for the fourth fastest time, Piastri could well have his hands full just trying to fend off the Ferraris, let alone getting  back on terms with Norris, who frankly looks like he has the edge here in Spielberg.

Mercedes suffered by comparison when measured against McLaren and the Scuderia, perhaps due to the extremely hot conditions here at the circuit, with George Russell only good enough for P5 and rookie teammate Kimi Antonelli scuffling his way to a lowly P9 spot on the grid. Racing Bulls Liam Lawson, who has really come on after a very rough start to the year in the senior Red Bull team, shocked his old teammate Max Verstappen by out-qualifying the Flying Dutchman, P7 to P8. Verstappen may have gotten a taste of what his wingmen usually have to deal with, as the four–time champ complained that his car was literally un-drivable. He struggled with snap oversteer repeatedly over the course of these short but demanding laps, and teammate Yuki Tsunoda fared even worse, coming home a shocking P18 and rueing his lack of front grip. On the other side of the coin, Kick Sauber rookie Gabriel Bortoleto achieved his best-ever qualifying result with a very impressive time good enough for P8. Alpine’s Pierre Gasly rounded out the Top 10 in P10, unable to improve his time when he spun on his final quali effort.

2025 F1 Grand Prix of Spain — Qualifying results

Piastri pips Norris for pole in Barcelona; Verstappen heads Russell, P3 to P4

In a tense and intriguing Saturday Qualifying for the Spanish Grand Prix, McLaren’s Lando Norris set the ultimate one-lap pace with a blistering final effort to wrest pole position from his teammate, Lando Norris. with Norris sitting atop the pylon ahead of the final flying laps of Q3, Piastri was letter perfect in all three sectors of the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, while Norris seemed to overdrive on his ultimate effort and ended up losing time to his hard-charging Aussie teammate. It was Piastri’s fifth pole of the season but only the second front row lockout for team McLaren.

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen also saved his best for last, getting the better of the very competitive Mercedes of George Russell, P3 to P4. Both of those elite drivers will be looking to pounce if there is any kind of kerfuffle between the McLaren duo on the opening lap of tomorrow’s race, a distinct possibility as their duel for the championship really heats up. Verstappen’s quali was even more impressive in the context of the second Red Bull of Yuki Tsunoda ending up dead last in P20, while Russell’s Silver Arrows wingman Kimi Antonelli earned a more representative P6. No matter who Red Bull put in that second car, it seems apparent that only Verstappen can get a handle on the tricky RB21.

Filling out a very competitive top seven, Ferrari showed well, with Lewis Hamilton getting the better of Charles Leclerc, P5 to P7, at a track where the seven-time champ has always run well. Alpine’s Pierre Gasly in P8, Racing Bulls’ impressive rookie Isack Hadjar in P9 and home race favorite Fernando Alonso in P10 rounded out the top ten starting spots on the grid.

2025 F1 Grand Prix of Bahrain — Qualifying results

McLaren’s Piastri rockets to dominant pole in Bahrain but teammate Norris fumbles final effort en route to P6; Mercedes’ Russell and Antonelli qualify P2 & P4 but penalized one spot each for pit infractions; Leclerc elevated to second on grid; Verstappen and Red Bull nowhere

A week after being thoroughly outperformed by Red Bull’s Max Verstappen at the Japanese Grand Prix, the McLaren duo of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri were keen to reassert their dominance during Saturday Qualifying for the Bahrain Grand Prix. But it ended up only Piastri who flew the Papaya flag by laying down a stunning marker here at the very tricky and twisty 5.4 kilometer Bahrain International Circuit, blasting his way to a dominant pole position, some two-tenths ahead of his closest pursuer, Mercedes’ George Russell. Meanwhile, Piastri’s normally superlative McLaren teammate, Lando Norris, failed to get the best out of his MCL39 and to come to grips with the windy conditions in the desert and could only manage P6 on his final flier in Q3, over four-tenths behind his pole-sitting teammate. While it is certainly more possible to pass here than at what ended up a stagnant Suzuka circuit last week, Piastri will have a major advantage getting away from the point while Norris has to fight his way through a quartet of fairly fast drivers to get back on terms for a win. Piastri will certainly be looking to maximize that advantage and take a victory that would vault him ahead of Norris for the points lead. Game on.

Mercedes were impressive and were definitely the next best team on pace here, just ahead of Ferrari and well ahead of the struggling Red Bull duo. But, while Russell was hyper-competitive with a P2 effort and rookie teammate Kimi Antonelli excelled to slot in at P4, the team were penalized for a pit lane infraction under Red Flag conditions after Haas’s Esteban Ocon had a major crash earlier in Q2. Both drivers were docked a grid place for the team’s error in sending them info the fast lane prematurely while the medical car was still driving to the front of the pits after Ocon had been dropped off for examination, big no-no. That elevated Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc to second on the grid and Alpine’s Pierre Gasly, who had a genuinely superb qualifying effort regardless, up to the second row and P4. Meanwhile, a week after their surprise victory in Japan, Red Bull were nowhere in Bahrain, with both Verstappen and Tsunoda struggling mightily with balance and breaking. It all ended up with a humbling P7 effort for last week’s winner Verstappen, with Tsunoda at least making it to Q3 for the first time in tow tries, albeit with only the tenth fastest time.

Carlos Sainz appeared to finally get the handle on his Williams with a very solid P8 result, but Lewis Hamilton again struggled in his Prancing Horse and could manage no better than an underwhelming P9.

After a raft of overnighters to start the season, tomorrow’s race airs at the perfectly decent time of 11AM Eastern on ESPN2 here in the States. With a supreme advantage over his teammate and the rest of the field, Piastri will be looking to both stamp his authority on the race from the get go and then vault himself ahead of Norris in the Championship by dint of the victory. 2025 F1 Grand Prix of Australia — Qualifying results

McLaren lay down marker in Melbourne to start season, as Norris grabs pole, Piastri P2; Verstappen settles for P3; Ferrari underwhelm

The highly anticipated 75th season of Formula kicked off properly during Saturday Qualifying for the Australian Grand Prix at the Albert Park GP Circuit in Melbourne when McLaren picked up were they left off in 2024 by locking out the front row ahead of Red Bull’s peerless ace Max Verstappen. Lando Norris bested his teammate and home race hero Oscar Piastri to take pole with a final do or die flying lap after having his only earlier Q3 time deleted for a track limits violation. The dynamic Papaya duo exceeded Verstappen’s best effort, relegating the Dutchman and reigning four-time consecutive champ to the second row and P3 on the grid. Mercedes’ George Russell put in a superlative effort to nail down P4 and, with some serious rain predicted for tomorrow’s race despite dry conditions to start the weekend, put himself in position to contend with the elite three ahead of him. Both Yuki Tsunoda, who was passed over for promotion to the senior Red Bull team and is inexplicably fighting for his F1 life, and the massively improved Williams of Alexander Albon, outperformed the much more heralded Ferrari duo of Charles Leclerc and new Scuderia recruit Lewis Hamilton. Tsunoda qualified P5 and Albon P6, while Leclerc could do no better than set the seventh fastest lap and Hamilton, who struggled mightily with the balance of his Prancing Horse and spun in Q2, was only good enough for P8 on the grid in his Ferrari debut. Pierre Gasly got the most out his Alpine in P9 and the second Williams of Carlos Sainz secured P10 on his first real effort in anger with his new team.

What all that will really mean if the heavy rains that are predicted to soak Albert Park on Sunday is anyone’s guess. But there were some less than promising signs for several young drivers at this tricky track. Verstappen’s latest wingman, New Zealander Liam Lawson, replacemnt for the long suffering Sergio Perez, struggled mightily with both mechanical issues and a shaky feel for the pointy dynamics of the RB21 and was unceremoniously bounced out in Q1 with only the eighteenth fastest lap. Likewise, Mercedes’ pick to replace seven-time champ Hamilton, rookie Andrea Kimi Antonelli, damaged his car by running over too many curbs and qualified down in P16. And while Haas’s new pilot Oliver Bearman had a miserable start to the year and was unable to get a lap in quali due to numerous crashes and the resulting mechanical issues those caused, the rookies Jack Doohan of Alpine and Gabriel Bortoleto of Kick Sauber fared somewhat better in P14 and P15 respectively.

2024 F1 Grand Prix of Qatar — Results & aftermath

Verstappen cruises to victory while chaos envelopes rest of field; Leclerc earns P2 ahead of Piastri as Ferrari close the gap to McLaren

A week after clinching his fourth consecutive Drivers’ title in Las Vegas, Red Bull’s peerless Max Verstappen showed no signs of resting on his laurels at Sunday’s Qatar Grand Prix. Peeved about being penalized one grid spot for an incident with Mercedes’ George Russell during Saturday qualifying, Verstappen launched off the line like a man possessed when the lights went out to start the race. He quickly made short work of the pole-sitting Russell, exacting his desert vengeance swiftly while steaming into Turn 1. Russell also lost a position to McLaren’s Lando Norris, dropping the lead Silver Arrow down to P3 with less than a third of lap yet run. Meanwhile, there was carnage at the back of the pack, with Haas’s Nico Hulkenberg losing traction and ping-ponging off Esteban Ocon’s Alpine and rookie Franco Colapinto’s Williams. While Hulkenberg was able to drive away from the accident from the large runoff area at the apex of Turn 1 with only a puncture, Ocon and Colapinto were not as fortunate and a Safety Car was deployed to retrieve both stricken cars.

It was a quick clean up and the race restarted towards the end of Lap 4, Verstappen quickly pulling a decent gap over the pursuing P2 McLaren of Norris. Once again, there was contact towards the rear, with the RBs of Yuki Tsunoda and Liam Lawson and the Sauber of Valtteri Bottas all making contact with one another but all three also able to continue. Lawson was eventually penalized 10-seconds for causing that collision and then the stewards also busted Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton for jumping the start, earning the seven-time champ a 5-second penalty. With all of the top contenders running slightly longer on their starting sets of Medium Pirelli tires due to that early Safety Car period, Russell became the first of the top ten to pit for fresh rubber on Lap 24, perhaps feeling the heat from the second McLaren of Oscar Piastri behind him and angling for an undercut advantage. But that gambit came to less than nothing when the Silver Arrows mechanics uncharacteristically botched the stop with a sticky rear right tire, leaving Russell helplessly stationary for an excruciating 7-seconds. When Russell rejoined on his new set of Hard compound tires, he found himself down in P11, behind several ostensibly slower cars and with a lot of work to do to pull himself back into the serious points.

The race began to get downright bizarre on Lap 30 of the 57-Lap contest from Losail International Circuit when a wing mirror from Alexander Albon’s Williams fell off and lay stationary just before the end of the start-finish straight. While double yellow flags were deployed in that sector, the race director inexplicably did not deploy a Safety Car to retrieve the errant mirror and lap after lap the cars had to try and tiptoe around that dangerous bit of debris. On Lap 33, however, Bottas ran over it, sending shards of glass and carbon fiber across the track surface. On Lap 34, Hamilton and the Ferrari of Carlos Sainz both sustained punctured tires as a result of running over that debris. On Lap 35, the Safety Car was finally deployed to clean up the jagged mess but it was far too late for those already disadvantaged by it. To make matters worse, Norris had failed to lift for the double yellows in that area while in hot pursuit of Verstappen a little earlier. The Dutchman immediately took notice and so too did the stewards, who soon announced they were investigating the McLaren man’s potential infraction.

When things had been cleaned up and the race restarted on Lap 39, it was once again Verstappen and Norris battling it out at the front, the Englishman getting much closer this time and running side by side with the Red Bull before backing out of the effort and living to fight another day, But once again there was trouble at the back, as the second Red Bull of Sergio Perez spun violently and ended up unable to continue, as did Hulkenberg, who got beached in one of the gravel traps. It was another terrible day for Perez, who seems more than likely to lose his Red Bull seat due to his horrid drop in form in the second half of the season, which has cost the team dearly in their hopes of repeating as Constructors’ champs. When the race restarted once more on Lap 42, Verstappen swanned away this time, while Norris found himself under attack by Charles Leclerc’s Ferrari. While Norris was able to hold the Prancing Horse off to maintain second place, on Lap 45 the hammer dropped and Norris was assessed a race altering 10-second stop/go penalty, which relegated him to last of the runners in P15 when he emerged from the pits. Hamilton also received a second penalty, this time a drive through for speeding in the pits earlier, adding insult to injury for the proud Englishman on a day where nothing went right for him and he would score no points.

As for Norris, he desperately tried to get back into the points, his indiscretion costing the McLaren team in their fight against Ferrari for the all-important Constructors’ Championship. Leclerc was now firmly ensconced in P2 and ended up 6-seconds behind  the victorious Verstappen when the checkered flag flew, making it a very good day for the Scuderia and the Monegasque. Russell had seemingly recovered from his disastrous pit stop when he crossed the line in P3 but was assessed a 5-second time penalty for dropping back too far from the Safety Car during its final deployment. That promoted Piastri to the podium in P3, Russell being relegated to P4 on a frustrating day for the Briton. Alpine’s Pierre Gasly had a superb drive to finish a very valuable P5, making the most of the rash of retirements and woes to other points contenders. Carlos Sainz further helped close Ferrari’s gap to McLaren to an eminently manageable 21-point deficit, while Norris clawed his back in the points with a late race pass on Bottas for P10 and also set the fastest lap en route to make it a pair on a day where much more seemed to be on the cards for him. Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso gave a vintage effort to finish an impressive P7 in a car that was nowhere on the straights; Sauber’s Zhou Guanyu scored his and the team’s first points of the year with an excellent drive to finish P8; and the  lone surviving Haas of Kevin Magnussen also took valuable points in P9

2024 F1 Grand Prix of São Paulo — Results & aftermath

Verstappen recovers from P17 start to take masterful victory in the rain at Interlagos; McLaren & P6 Norris miss out with pit strategy, as Alpine capitalize on chaos to score surprise double podium with Ocon & Gasly

It was a tale of two polar opposite moods for Red Bull’s points-leading Max Verstappen in the quest for his fourth consecutive Drivers’ Championship and McLaren’s Lando Norris on his hunt for his first crown on a hectic, rain affected São Paulo Grand Prix. With Saturday qualifying postponed until Sunday due to torrential downpours, conditions were not that much better this morning, leading to multiple red flags and crashes. But it was also completed and set the race grid for just a little later in the day, with Norris soaring to take the pole while Verstappen was hampered by a red flag in Q2, thereby bounced in P12 and then handed a 5-spot grid penalty for engine component changes. That meant the Flying Dutchman was mired down in P17 to start the race, while his chief challenger started from P1. With the rain moderate on the formation lap,  Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll spun off the circuit, leading to confusion and a false start before the grid was reorganized for the proper beginning of the race. When the lights finally went off, Norris lost P1 to the ambitious Mercedes of George Russell, who made the superior getaway, while Verstappen set about picking off back markers and improving his position as much as possible. The modern Rainmaster did just that, and by Lap 11 he had already passed the second McLaren of Oscar Piastri for P7, with ambitions for even greater results.

The dilemma for all the drivers soon became when exactly to come in for fresh Pirelli wet weather tires. Ferrari were the first to pull the trigger, calling Charles Leclerc in for new Intermediates. While Norris debated making that move with his race engineer, the rain began intensifying again. When Haas’s Nico Hulkenberg brought out a Virtual Safety Car with a spin and temporarily getting stuck off track, both Norris and Russell pulled the trigger on their first pit stops. But Hulkenberg was quickly helped to get running again by the over eager marshals, for which the German was eventually black flagged from the race, and the VSC ended just as suddenly as it began, leaving Norris & Russell unable to take full advantage of the field’s previously reduced speed. With the rain now pelting down on Interlagos, a Safety Car was deployed on Lap 30 to slow things down to a safe pace. But very soon after rookie Franco Colapinto binned his Williams after hydroplaning, which brought out a Red Flag stoppage on Lap 32. Under Formula 1’s quirky rules, that meant that the entire field was entitled to a free change of tires while stationary in the pits, putting all those who had already stopped at a major disadvantage. 

For Verstappen, that was just the stroke of luck he needed and when the race resumed, he trailed only the unlikely leader, Alpine’s Esteban Ocon. Another Safety Car was deployed on Lap 43 when Carlos Sainz crashed his Ferrari, putting the Spaniard’s difficult weekend in Brazil out if its misery a week after his triumph in Mexico. When racing resumed on Lap 43, Verstappen got the jump on Ocon and took a lead he wouldn’t relinquish by the time the full 69-laps were in the books. Meanwhile, Norris ran wide on that same restart and found himself plummeting down to P7. Verstappen scampered away to the tune of an eventual 19.47-second final advantage over Ocon and took an astonishing win in São Paulo to earn his first victory since Round 10 in Spain back in June. But Norris was only able to gain one more place when all was said and done and finished P6. It was a huge shift in momentum back to Verstappen in the championship hunt and a blow to Norris, who now trails by 62-points with only  three races remaining. While the timing of the pit stop and the eventual Red Flag really hurt Norris, Verstappen made his own luck with a superb drive in the rain and an improbable and historic comeback victory after that lowly P17 start. This may well have been the race that ends up defining the 2024 season and secures Verstappen’s fourth consecutive title when the final story is written in the F1 history books.

After an absolutely bonkers conclusion in Brazil to a three races in a row triple header, the teams finally get a breather. The next race is three weeks hence, as the Formula 1 circus travels back to the United States for the Las Vegas Grand Prix under the gaudy lights of the strip and the Sphere. With momentum now swinging firmly back towards Verstappen after his heroics in São Paolo today, Norris and McLaren will look to regroup and get their man back into his now long shot Drivers’ Title hunt. Who knows how things will go in this most unpredictable Formula 1 season? But there is one sure thing — rain will definitely not be a factor in Vegas. Norris recovers from poor start to hammer Verstappen on home turf; Leclerc holds off Piastri for P3

In the halcyon days of Red Bull’s dominance, a bobble like the one McLaren’s pole-sitting Lando Norris made to start Sunday’s Dutch Grand Prix would have relegated the young Briton to a second place start once Max Verstappen pounced to take the lead amidst the rolling dunes of Zandvoort. But such are the strides that McLaren and their young duo of drivers have made that Norris not only kept his cool after ceding the lead but then set himself to relentlessly closing down the race leading Red Bull in rather astonishingly rapid fashion. Proving that the pace advantage in Formula 1 no longer rests with Red Bull, McLaren’s main man hunted down Verstappen and re-passed the Dutchman in front of his home crowd with relative ease on Lap 18 of this 72-lap contest. Norris almost immediately scampered away out of DRS range and built enough of an advantage to withstand Verstappen’s attempt at an undercut on Lap 27, emerging from his only out stop of the race a lap later just under five-seconds ahead of the Flying Dutchman. After that, it was clear that the McLaren in Norris’s hands had the legs on Verstappen’s Red Bull, and Norris never faced a real challenge for the rest of the race. He subsequently earned his second F1 victory and second this season after breaking his duck in Miami, taking the checkered flag nearly 23-seconds ahead of the Red Bull runner-up.

Ferrari’s Chalres Leclerc exceeded expectations by making a very good getaway of his own to start the race and then undercutting the field on Lap 25 to get track position on the second McLaren of Oscar Piastri and the second Red Bull of Sergio Perez. Lecerc was then able to hold off Piastri in the final stanza of the race to claim P3 and earn the last step on the podium. But with Piastri still coming home a solid P4 while Perez drifted to a rather desultory P6 finish, and combined with Norris’s maximum 26-points haul for not only winning but setting the fastest lap of the day, McLaren closed ground on Red Bull in the all-important Constructors’ Standings to the tune of a mere thirty-point deficit. Norris also sliced into Verstappen’s lead in the Drivers’ points, closing to within seventy with nine races remaining on the calendar. In a twist few would have predicted after the opening rounds of the 2024 season, Red Bull are now the ones chasing McLaren and hoping they can do just enough to hold off the papaya orange menace filling up their rearview mirrors in both title hunts.

Leclerc’s Scuderia teammate Carlos Sainz did well to come home ahead of Perez in P5 after being hampered by limited running in practice and starting down in P10. Mercedes had a step back here after their strong run of results heading into the summer break, leaving the team scratching their heads over their relative lack of pace that saw George Russell only finish P7 after starting from fourth on the grid. Teammate Lewis Hamilton at least recovered somewhat from his lowly P14 starting position and came home in P8, cold if any comfort for driver and team. Alpine’s Pierre Gasly had another solid drive to take valuable points in P9 and Fernando Alonso was the lone Aston Martin to score in P10.
