2022 F1 Grand Prix of Saudi Arabia — Qualifying results

Red Bull’s Perez snatches pole from Ferrari’s Leclerc at tricky Jeddah Corniche Street Circuit; Sainz P3, Verstappen P4; Hamilton shockingly knocked out in Q1; Schumacher airlifted to hospital after vicious Q2 shunt

On an incident-filled and frankly scary Saturday qualifying for tomorrow’s Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, it was Red Bull’s ostensible Number Two who managed to come out on top of the timing sheets. Veteran Sergio Perez bested not only his much more heralded teammate, Max Verstappen, but also both Ferraris, the team that looks most likely to challenge Red Bull for the big prizes this season. With a rebel drone strike on a nearby oil facility yesterday sending a a wave of unease through the paddock, the simmering tension was further compounded when Haas’s Mick Schumacher lost it during Q2 and suffered a vicious shunt  Turn 10 of this very tight and tricky Jeddah Conriche Street Circuit that shot him into one concrete barrier and then across to the other side of the track and down the road for quite some ways. While the Haas was completely destroyed, the car also did its part by breaking apart at the rear, as designed, thereby dissipating energy away from the driver. So, despite the massive impact, the initial medical reports on Schumacher were all positive and he was airlifted to hospital for precautionary reasons rather than emergency ones. However, the young German, who is trying to follow in his seven-time champion father Michael’s footsteps, was preemptively ruled out for the Grand Prix and it looks like Haas will only be fielding Kevin Magnussen’s car when the lights go out for tomorrow’s race. Magnussen kept his cool after his teammate’s disturbing crash and qualified P10.

Schumacher’s accident led to a lengthy Red Flag period with just under five minutes in Q2, both for Schumacher’s painfully slow extraction from his wrecked car and then for some serious track cleanup and barrier repair at the scene of the crash site. But the marshals and race directors did yeoman’s work and were able to get Quali back underway, leading to the all important top ten shootout in Q3. Ferrari had looked the strongest on overall one-lap pace through the race weekend so far, so it was no surprise to see Charles Leclerc, last week’s race winner and pole-sitter in Bahrain, lay down the quickest lap as the seconds ticked down in the final qualifying session. His teammate Carlos Sainz slotted in right behind him by a little over a tenth on his final lap, making it a provisional Ferrari front row lockout, But Perez had other ideas. The veteran pilot drove a flawless final lap, coming nerve wrakingly close to the barriers at times, but wringing the maximum speed out of the Red Bull to earn his first-ever Formula 1 pole and beat back the Ferrari challenge for today. Interestingly, his normally superlative teammate Verstappen struggled to get his Soft Pirelli tires into their optimal operational window durning a cool and breezy night in the Red Sea port city of Jeddah and the Dutch reigning world champion could only muster the fourth fastest time. So it will be Perez and Leclerc on the front row and Sainz and Verstappen on row two, which should make for a really intriguing and likely contentious opening lap in tomorrow’s GP. Continue reading

Leclerc victorious in season opener, Sainz P2 in promising start to 2022 campaign for Ferrari; disastrous late double DNF for Red Bull leads to podium for Mercedes’ Hamilton, P4 for Russell

In the first race of the 2022 Formula 1 season, team Ferrari proved that its early mastery of the new ground effect-dependent chassis and new engine specs was not a fluke. The famed Scuderia from Maranello, which suffered a prolonged period of mediocrity for much of the prior turbo-hybrid era, saw a spring resurgence as their blood red Prancing Horses finished one-two in the Bahrain Grand Prix on Sunday. Charles Leclerc, who clearly was the fastest man of the weekend, earned victory after starting from the pole, while his stablemate Carlos Sainz fought hard and took advantage of the terminal failures of both contending Red Bulls late in the race to come home a happy  P2. That marked the first one-two Ferrari finish in a GP since 2019 in Singapore when Sebastian Vettel led home Leclerc. While Leclerc was relatively dominant all day, he was effectively harassed by Verstappen’s Red Bull for the lead throughout, including a ding dong, see saw battle between the two after the first round of pit stops between Laps 16 and 20. Verstappen and his team made effective use of the undercut coming in a lap earlier than then Monegasque to gain track position on Leclerc, which led to several laps of Verstappen passing Leclerc going into Turn 1 and Leclerc snatching the lead back coming out of Turn 4, where the Ferrari’s excellence in the slow speed corners neutralized the Red Bull’s straight line pace advantage. After a period of holding stations and status quo for many laps after that while Verstappen bided his time, it looked like it would be game on again between the two contenders when a full Safety Car was deployed on Lap 46 of this 57-lap contest after Pierre Gasly’s AlphaTauri stopped on track and unceremoniously burst into flames. It proved to be a very bad omen for other Red Bull-engined cars.

With the field now bunched up again behind Leclerc after pretty much everyone dove to the pits for the cheap stop and a switch to the high performing Soft Pirelli tires to finish out the race, Leclerc’s advantage over Verstappen was reduced to less than a second. But by the time the Safety Car tucked in at the end of Lap 50, Verstappen had been on the radio complaining about a heavy feel to the steering, perhaps having something to do with the power steering hydraulics. Leclerc initiated the restart superbly and gapped Verstappen, although the Dutch reigning world champion still seemed able to stay on the lead Ferrari’s gearbox. But Verstappen’s radio messages to and from the pit wall kept getting more fraught and there was clearly trouble brewing in the car. Sure enough, on Lap 54 something in Verstappen’s engine let go and he was quickly overtaken by most of those behind him. Verstappen wound up limping his mount to the pits but the issue was terminal and he was forced to retire. Climbing out of the car in stunned disbelief as the race stormed to its conclusion without him was a sad way to begin the defense of his first championship.

Leclerc snatches pole for season opener, Sainz P3 in promising start for Ferrari; Red Bull’s reigning champ Verstappen qualifies P2, Hamilton only P5 as Mercedes struggle

The real beginning of Formula 1’s latest new era yielded a multitude of surprises, as the teams put the completely redesigned cars on display for the first time in earnest during Saturday Qualifying for tomorrow’s season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix. With a radical new set of rules changing the look and design of the cars, most notably in cutting down on the complexity of the wings and exterior aero elements for less downforce but with a renewed emphasis on ground effects to stick the chassis to the road surface in exchange, it was the first opportunity to see which teams came out of the box strong and which still had work yet to do. And the answer appears to be that Ferrari has made the biggest improvements under the new regulations and the famed team from Maranello could well be geared up for a mano a mano brawl with Red Bull and their reigning champion, Max Verstappen, for the big prizes at the end of the year. Obviously, one swallow does not make a spring, but Charles Leclerc was able to put his blood red Prancing Horse on pole under the lights at the Bahrain International Circuit, besting Verstappen’s vaunted Adrian Newey-designed Red Bull RB18 at the line by a relatively hefty .123-seconds. Confirming the potential power of the new Ferrari design, Leclerc’s teammate Carlos Sainz was also in contain for the pole, though in the end he slotted in at P3 just barely of Verstappen’s pace. Meanwhile, the Dutch champ’s Ref Bull teammate, Sergio Perez, looked set to reprise his pivotal wingman role once again in 2022, as the Mexican veteran could manage no better than the fourth fastest lap in the face of the Prancing Horses’ rediscovered competitiveness.

The inverse of Ferrari’s resurgent good fortune was the poor debut performance of the normally mighty Mercedes new W13 chassis. With the new ground effects also come new aero headaches and Mercedes have suffered from severe oscillations, aka “porpoising”, throughput testing and in these first days of practice. While the team’s braintrust were able to dial out some of that, especially on their seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton’s mount, Hamilton could still do no better than a P5 start for tomorrow’s race. To say the least, that is an unfamiliar position for the Briton, who frankly dominated the just completed hybrid era until the ascendence of Verstappen and his controversial championship-clinching win to end the 2021 campaign in Abu Dhabi last December. Worse still for the eight-time consecutive Constructors’ Champions, their new number two, England’s young George Russell, suffered the ignominy of qualifying down in P9, about where he would normally end up in the pokey Williams last year. If that wasn’t disheartening enough, the previous Merc second banana, Valtteri Bottas, out-qualified Russell in P6 with his new team, the Ferrari-powered Alfa Romeo. In fact, Ferrari power looked like this first weekend’s winner already, with not only Bottas keeping his Q3 streak alive at Alfa but also Kevin Magnussen marking his return to F1 with a brilliant effort to capture P7 on the grid for perpetual back marker Haas despite battling hydraulic issues. and it was a very promising day for the Scuderia on the power plant front. On the other side off the engine equation, all four Mercedes-powered McLarens and Aston Martins failed to make it into the final qualifying round. Savvy veteran Fernando Alonso willed his Alpine Renault into P8 with a fine final effort while the Red Bull (Honda)-powered AlphaTauri of Pierre Gasly struggled with overall handling rand could do no better than P10.

2020 F1 Grand Prix of Bahrain — Results & aftermath

Hamilton wins Bahrain GP marred by horrific Grosjean opening lap crash; Verstappen P2, Albon elevated to P3 as late-race failure dooms Perez’s podium hopes

Sunday’s Bahrain Grand Prix, one of Formula 1’s most seemingly anodyne races, provided a frightening reminder of the inherent risks of the sport when Romain Grosjean’s Haas speared off the track on the opening lap and hit an oblique-angle armco barrier head-on at nearly 140 mph, sending the cockpit area with the Frenchman through the barrier like a missile and tearing the rear completely off the car. That catastrophic structural failure also breached the fuel system, igniting the car on impact and engulfing Grosjean in a huge fireball. It was one of the most spectacular and horrifying crashes during an F1 race in probably decades but the constant advances in safety throughout that time ensured that the Frenchman survived the shunt with only relatively minor injuries. The halo device in particular appeared to have done the life-saving work it was designed for, protecting the driver not only from a serious head injury, as befell the late Jules Bianchi when he slid under a crane on track under yellow at a rainy Suzuka in 2014, but also miraculously keeping Grosjean conscious after impact and able to release his own belts to escape the inferno engulfing him within a little under 20 seconds. The first-lap medical car, which follows directly behind the pack on the opening lap for just such an incident and was the brainchild of the legendary Professor Sid Watkins back in the early ’90s, also did exemplary work, with Dr. Ian Roberts and driver Alan van der Merwe getting to the scene promptly and able to assist Grosjean’s escape and treat the shaken driver immediately. It might have been a different story had the halo device, as well as the now standard HANS device, not kept Grosjean conscious, as the safety personnel would have had to somehow extract him from within the fire. As it was, the fortunate Frenchman suffered only burns to his hands and is recovering in a nearby military hospital and in good spirits.

After that, the race itself mainly seemed an afterthought, with a very long Red Flag period delay to repair the barrier at Turn 6, which was designed at an angle for cars to skid off of not strike directly, offering drivers and the entire paddock far too long to watch replays of the horrific incident and consider the danger of their profession that all too often is minimized in this generally hyper-safe era of F1. But after over an hour stationary in the pits, the drivers did what they are paid to do, remounting their vehicles and getting back out to restart the race. It was only Lap 3 of this 57-lap contest and while Mercedes ace Lewis Hamilton led Red Bull’s Max Verstappen from a second stationary grid start, the race one again came to an unceremonious halt when the Racing Point of Lance Stroll flipped over after contacting Daniil Kvyat’s AlphaTauri while contesting the same apex real estate at Turn 8. Kvyat’s car had also been the one that touched wheels when Grosjean cut across the track abruptly to send him into that lurid crash but the Russian was not at fault there. In the case of the Stroll incident, however, he was deemed to be the culprit and was levied a 10-second time penalty by the stewards. After a much quicker Safety Car period, the race restarted yet again on Lap 9 and Hamilton put his foot down and got on with the business of winning the Grand Prix.

Obviously it’s never easy driving a Formula 1 car, especially after witnessing such a traumatizing crash, but Hamilton blocked out all distractions and made it look that way, holding off Max Verstappen’s Red Bull handily throughout the remainder of the race and keeping it clean to take yet another win, his eleventh out of fifteen races this year, as well as extending his F1 record victory total to 95. With Hamilton’s teammate Valtteri Bottas having an off day after suffering an early puncture that essentially ruined his race, Verstappen gave yet another effort good enough for P2 but his car never really matched the pace of the lead Silver Arrow. Verstappen’s teammate, Alexander Albon, got a much needed bit of luck late in the race when the Racing Point of Sergio Perez, running comfortably in third and looking for his second successive podium, suffered what looked to be a turbo failure on Lap 54 and tumbled out of the points. That promoted Albon to P3 and the last spot on the podium, marking the first time this year both Red Bull’s had made it to the post-race champagne celebration, and perhaps taking Albon off the hot seat. With Bottas also finishing in eighth after his poor race, that elevated Verstappen to only 12 points behind the Finn for second in the Drivers’ Championship with only two races remaining. Bottas will now have to put his head down, regroup quickly for next week’s GP at this same Sakhir circuit and then do the business to hold off the hard charging Dutchman and stave off the ignominy of finishing third in this year’s most dominant chassis.

Further down the order, the rest pf the top 10 also benefitted from Perez’s heartbreaking late-race retirement, with the McLaren’s of Lando Norris and Carlos Sainz making out particularly well by coming home P4 and P5 respectively. With both Stroll and Perez failing to finish for Racing Point, McLaren’s solid points haul on the day saw them elevated to P3 in the valuable Constructors’ Championship with a 12 point gap to now-P4 Racing Point. AlphaTauri’s Pierre Gasly did well to make the most of a two-stop strategy, running an exceptionally long second stint and avoiding the drama that befell his teammate Kvyat to take a solid P6. The Renaults of Daniel Ricciardo and Esteban Ocon battled each other all race long and eventually would up sandwiching Bottas at the finish in P7 and P9 respectively. And perhaps the biggest beneficiary of Perez’s engine failure was Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, who snuck into the last points paying position at P10 with a car that was frankly terrible on anything less than the freshest rubber.

A final word about Grosjean’s accident: This exact type of impact with a stationary barrier is what killed Francois Cevert at Watkins Glenn in 1973 and Grosjean’s angle of entry would also probably have led to the same of cockpit intrusion that resulted in Jules Bianchi’s eventually fatal brain injury when he submarined that ill-placed crane in the rain in Japan. There can be no doubt that the halo saved Romain Grosjean’s life on this day in Bahrain. It may be “ugly” fro  an aesthetic perspective but it absolutely did its job in the Haas’s crash even if the cause of the fuel cells breach and ignition require further investigation. The debate over whether cockpit protection is really needed in open wheel/single seater racing is well and truly over and it needs to be mandated right down to the lowest professional levels of the sport. The safety of the drivers, famous and anonymous, demand nothing less.

The next race is in but a week’s time — at this exact circuit for the Sakhir Grand Prix, the penultimate race of the delayed, abbreviated and very weird 2020 season. Look for some track safety improvements following Sunday’s incidents and hopefully a cleaner race by the drivers overall.

2020 F1 Grand Prix of Germany — Results & aftermath

Hamilton romps to victory, equals Schumacher’s win record, as bad luck befalls Bottas; Verstappen a distant runner-up, joyful Ricciardo P3

Mercedes ace Lewis Hamilton scored a decisive win in Sunday’s German Grand Prix, aka the Eiffel GP, taking advantage of his teammate Valtteri Bottas’s misfortune and putting the rest of the field in the dust to earn his 91st career F1 victory. That ties the English six-time champion with the legendary Michael Schumacher for all-time wins in Formula 1 and Hamilton has six more races left on the calendar to exceed a mark that many through would never be approached much less surpassed. Recovering decisively from the two previous relatively lost race weekends where he shot himself in the foot with avoidable penalties, Hamilton now has a 69-point bulge in the Driver’s standings over Bottas after the latter DNF’s through no fault of his own. Hamilton is also on track to tie another epic Schumi record by earning his seventh Drivers’ Championship, putting his name in the hat for best-ever F1 pilot and potentially transforming a very weird and belated, COVID-marred 2020 campaign into a season for the ages. In a nicely symbolic coda to the race weekend, Hamilton was gifted one of Schumacher’s race helmets from 2012, the German legend’s last season, by son Mick Schumacher. The fast-rising Mick hopes to be able to dice with Hamilton on track in the very near future and one day try for a championship season of his own to carry on family tradition. But that is for the future. In this present, Hamilton has proven to be the greatest driver of this generation by some distance and Sunday’s easy win just reinforced that.

Despite starting from pole, Bottas was rounded up by Hamilton relatively quickly when his team leader passed the Finn for P1 on Lap 13. Hamilton would never look back and while Bottas was hoping to use an undercut strategy with an early pit stop to try and get back to the front it all came to naught when his Silver Arrow suffered terminal loss of power and he was forced to retire on Lap 19. Suddenly all the talk of Bottas mounting a late season challenge to Hamilton’s supremacy fizzled just like his power unit. That left one putative contender remaining with the majority of the 60-lap event still to be contested: Red Bull’s Max Verstappen. But despite looking quick enough to challenge the front running Merc at times, the Dutch wunderkind could never really match Hamilton’s pace over the long runs. This was proven when a Safety Car on Lap 44 erased nearly all of Hamilton’s lead by bunching up the field and seemed to give Verstappen the late-race opening he was looking for. But when the Safety Car was withdrawn on Lap 49, Verstappen could make no inroads over the remaining eleven laps and Hamilton ended up cruising home over four-seconds to the good. Red Bull may be gradually getting closer to Mercedes’ supreme pace but they are running out of races to truly overhaul them.

Bottas’ misfortune opened the door to a podium position from one of the “best of the rest” in the field and Renault’s Daniel Ricciardo seized the opportunity by charging through it with a masterful drive to take a skillful P3. Holding off the game Racing Point of Sergio Perez down the stretch, the veteran Aussie grabbed his first podium since 2018, his first as Renault driver and the factory team’s first since way back in 2011. It seems almost a pity that Ricciardo will be moving on to McLaren next year after such a satisfying achievement for both driver and team but that’s the way the F1 world turns. Just ask Perez, who was racy all day long to continue his strong streak of points finishes with a solid P4. Racing Point declined to re-sign the steady Mexican earlier and he still doesn’t have a ride for next season. And just ask today’s other Racing Point driver, Nico Hulkenberg, who pinch hit for the team on short notice for the second time, this time repacking the ill Lance Stroll, and fought his way from dead last on the grid all the way up to a terrific P8 finish, earning him rightful Driver Of The Day accolades. The German will be back broadcasting the next race assuming Stroll makes a full recovery from whatever is ailing him.

Carlos Sainz took P5 for McLaren, Pierre Gasly was P6 for AlphaTauri and the Ferrari of Charles Leclerc finished behind those two ostensible midfield runners in P7, which was still far superior to his Scuderia stablemate Sebastian Vettel’s latest pointless P11. Roman Grosjean scored his first points of the year for Haas in P9, as did Alfa Romeo’s Antonio Giovinazzi in P10, who bested Vettel’s factory Ferrari with the laps winding down in a desperate bid to extend his F1 career, which is likely in jeopardy.

2020 F1 Grand Prix of Hungary — Results & aftermath

Hamilton untouchable at Hungaroring for dominant win; Verstappen recovers from pre-race shunt to take P2, Bottas P3 after poor start

Mercedes Ace Lewis Hamilton romped to victory at one of his favorite tracks on Sunday, dominating the Hungarian Grand Prix from pole and coming home over 8 seconds ahead of his nearest pursuer. It made for Hamilton’s eighth career win at the Hungaroring and his second on the trot out of the first three races of this long delayed 2020 season, sending an ominous message to any other Championship hopeful that in this Mercedes Silver Arrow in this particular era, Ham is still the man to beat. With the field starting on wet weather tires due to a pre-race shower, Hamilton was unfazed and shot away from the top spot on the grid as if from a cannon. On the other hand, his teammate and only true rival due to sharing the identical superlative machinery, Valtteri Bottas, completely muffed his start from P2, very nearly jumping it and then bogging down once the lights really did go out. Bottas struggled for grip and was overtaken by both Ferraris, the overachieving Racing Point of Lance Stroll and, most crucially, the Red Bull of Max Verstappen. The Flying Dutchman, who qualified poorly in P7 and then spun into the barriers on the wet warm-up lap, necessitating a heroic  effort by his mechanics to the front end on the starting grid, remarkably had clawed his way all the way up to P3 by the end of the first flying lap.

2019 F1 Grand Prix of Brazil — Qualifying results

Verstappen seizes pole in Sao Paolo for Red Bull; Ferrari’s Vettel P2, Hamilton P3 for Merecedes

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen earned his second career pole position and second of the year during Saturday qualifying for the Brazilian Gran Prix. The Dutch wunderkind was consistently faster than the more vaunted Ferraris and Mercedes, as the Red Bull team look to finish the season strong and stick it to the big boys in the penultimate race of the Formula 1 calendar tomorrow at Autódromo José Carlos Pace in Sao Paolo, more commonly know as Interlagos. Verstappen was over a tenth quicker than Sebastian Vettel’s P2 Prancing Horse and the P3 Silver Arrow of newly minted 6-time champion Lewis Hamilton. Known for having driven one of the best ever wet weather races here back in 2016, Verstappen will be looking to keep his top spot until the checkered flag flies on Sunday and earn his first Brazilian GP win.

With the teams originally mixed and matched at the front of the grid, Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas was promoted to P4 alongside his teammate Lewis Hamilton even though Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc bested the Finn in quali because Leclerc faces a 10-spot grid penalty come race day due to a power unit change. 2019 F1 Grand Prix of Russia — Results & aftermath

Hamilton & Mercedes back on top with fortuitous win at favorite Sochi track, Bottas second for Silver Arrows 1-2; Leclerc 3rd for Ferrari but Vettel DNFs

After three post-break races in which they were thoroughly outclassed by their arch-rivals Ferrari, mighty Mercedes got back to their winning ways at the Russian Grand Prix on Sunday. Despite their inferiority to the Prancing Horses in a straight line, which saw young phenom Charles Leclerc start from pole for the Scuderia and Sebastian Vettel overtake P2 starter Lewis Hamilton with the aid of Leclerc’s slipstream on the opening lap, the Silver Arrows benefitted greatly from a mid-race Virtual Safety Car that enabled them to get a “free” pit stop, emerging with a 1-2 lead in a race that they would never relinquish. The fact that the VSC was caused by a failure of Vettel’s MGU-K unit, forcing the German to pull off to a runoff area while profanely wishing for the return of the simpler V-12 engines, made it all the more bitter of a pill for Ferrari to swallow. With his wingman Bottas able to hold off the hard-charging but lonely Ferrari of Leclerc for the last 23 laps of this 53 lap contest Hamilton cruised home to take his ninth victory of the season and fourth overall at Sochi Autodrom. It was Mercedes sixth win here and they are the only team to claim the top step since Sochi was added to the F1 schedule in 2014. Bottas held station for a P2 finish and the talented Leclerc was left with an unfulfilled third place.

Despite a somewhat anti-climactic second half, which truth be told was caused by F1’s foolish insistence on keeping the pits open during the first laps of a Safety Car or VSC period and allowing random track position to determine who gets the lucky quick pit stop, the opening of the race was gangbusters in terms of both on track action and intra-team intrigue. With the bitter taste of Singapore still in Leclerc’s mouth, where he was undercut on pit strategy by Vettel leading directly to the latter’s victory at Leclerc’s expense, Ferrari still insisted on playing Machiavellian games. With a prearranged move Vettel got the drop on Hamilton as the lights went out and then drafted his teammate Leclerc down the long front straight to also overtake the Monegasque for the lead of the race. During a brief Safety Car period from Laps 2 -3 caused by a 3-car shunt between Romain Grosjean, Daniel Ricciardo and Antonio Giovanazzi, Leclerc could be heard talking about doing what was asked of him at the start and wanting Vettel to give him back P1. But when the Safety Car period ended Vettel had other ideas, as well as the pace to keep Leclerc behind him.

To add fuel to those conspiracy minded among us, Ferrari then appeared to try and engineer an involuntary give back of the lead to Leclerc by keeping Vettel running on his opening set of Soft Pirelli tires a bit too long. By the time Vettel came in for the switch to Mediums on Lap 26 he was losing over a second to Leclerc on track. It was all rendered moot by Vettel’s engine failure just a lap after pitting but the head games from the masters of Maranello are sure to increase the growing tension and distrust between their two highly talented pilots, one a highly accomplished four-time World Champion and one ambitious in the extreme and seeking to make his mark in the sport. Compounding the complexity for Ferrari it was Vettel’s DNF that caused the Virtual Safety Car that enabled Hamilton and Bottas to dive to the pits to change off of Mediums and onto Softs in half the loss of track time as under Green flag conditions. Leclerc meanwhile stayed out and pitted two laps later on Lap 30 under another Safety Car period caused by the Williams of George Russell’s break failure and crash. But he gave up his leading track position even so and was only able to rejoin in P3, crucially behind the obstinate Merc of Bottas. So there will be a lot to discuss — and probably a lot of hard feelings — at team Ferrari’s post-race debrief!

2019 F1 Grand Prix of Russia — Qualifying results

Leclerc and Ferrari keep rolling with pole in Sochi, Vettel P3; Hamilton P2

Ferrari’s stunning second half turnaround continued as their ascendent young star driver scored his fourth consecutive pole position at Sochi Autdrom during Saturday qualifying for tomorrow’s Russian Grand Prix. A week after the rapidly improving Monegasque was left seething after he felt denied a win in Singapore due to fortuitous pit strategy by his senior teammate, Sebastian Vettel, Leclerc gave his best effort to try and get back to the winner’s circle for the third time this season with a blistering 1:32.613 lap time, over 4-tenths ahead of Vettel. Vettel could do no better than the third fastest time of the day and the confidence boost after his much-needed if somewhat lucky Singapore victory could be short lived under the onslaught of his stablemate’s consistent excellence. With their superior straight-line speed now married to improved downforce aerodynamics the Prancing Horses have definitively relegated mighty Mercedes to the second best team on the track and this time at a venue where Mercedes have always dominated previously. Lewis Hamilton, the Silver Arrows’ ace, did manage to split the Ferraris with the second fastest time and the reigning world champion and current points leader will be looking to slipstream himself in front of Leclerc when the lights go out and the cars take off down the long, fast first straightaway.

Mercedes themselves were also temporarily split when Red Bull’s Max Verstappen bettered Valtteri Bottas P4 to P5. But, while they proved that they can fly faster than Mercedes at certain circuits, Verstappen will have to take a 5-spot grid penalty come Sunday. Additionally, their second driver, Alexander Albon, crashed heavily in Q1, most likely also necessitating a gearbox change, and so and will start from the rear of the grid. The two McLarens of Carlos Sainz and Lando Norris showed well and qualified P6 and P8 respectively and the two Renault’s of Nico Hulkenberg and Daniel Ricciardo were P7 and P10 on the timing sheets respectively. Romain Grosjean came home ninth fastest and Haas will be desperate to score some points tomorrow in a season that has come apart rather badly for them.

2019 F1 Grand Prix of Hungary — Qualifying results

Verstappen finally grabs maiden pole at Hungaroring for ascendent Red Bull; Bottas bests Hamilton P2 to P3; Ferrari trails

Red Bull’s phenom Max Verstappen finally came good with his first career pole position during Saturday qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix. Despite having seven F1 GP victories already under his belt by the age of 21 pole position has eluded him in this Mercedes dominated era. Not any more. The Dutch wunderkind blistered the Hungaroring to the tune of 1:14.572, shattering the lap record and besting the next closest competitor, Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas, by a slim .018. Although it may be too late to do anything about Mercedes hegemony after their mostly dominant first half this year Verstappen and Red Bull are showing signs of challenging the inconsistent Ferrari for second in the Championships. Young Max has won two of the last three Grand Prix, including his masterclass at the rain-soaked Hockenheimring last weekend, and the RB15 with him behind the wheel is clearly on the ascent. Ferrari and Mercedes had better watch out.

Bottas’ P2 was a welcome respite after whispers have begun about his future at the Mercedes factory team after crashing out in Germany last week. That he grabbed the second spot on the front row at the expense of his teammate Lewis Hamilton, who could do no better than a P3 start on the grid, was all the more satisfying for the Finn. Hamilton will line up in Row 2 alongside the Ferrari of Charles Leclerc, who recovered after spinning his Prancing Horse firmly into the barrier on the exit of the last turn in Q1 to qualify in P4. Leclerc is another star driver who, like Hamilton and Bottas, will be looking for redemption after a miserable time of it in Germany last race. Leclerc’s teammate Sebastian Vettel, who conversely had a terrific run from last to P2 in Hockenheim, could do no better than the fifth fastest lap in qualifying. The second Red Bull of Pierre Gasly was once again well behind his team leader in P6. But McLaren’s Lando Norris out-performed expectations with a very solid P7 time.

The other McLaren of Carlos Sainz was P8, proving that the team have finally found consistent pace for the first time in years. Rounding out the top 10 qualifiers, Romain Grosjean drove his older-spec Haas up into P9 and the Alfa-Romeo of Kimi Raikkonen will start P10.
