2023 F1 Grand Prix of the United States — Qualifying results

Leclerc bests Norris for USGP pole at COTA, Hamilton earns P3 for Sunday’s race; Verstappen drops from P1 to P6 after final lap deleted due to track limits violation

Formula 1 returned to the United States for the second of three planned visits in 2023, this time to the fantastic Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas for the United States Grand Prix. Round 19 was once again another frantic Sprint weekend for the second race in a row so, qualifying for Sunday’s race took place on Friday, while the Sprint Shootout qualifying and the Sprint will occur on Saturday. On the fast and flowing COTA in front of a packed house on a hot Texas day, it was Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc who came away with pole for the actual race, once again excelling on a Sprint weekend. Leclerc was genuinely fast here but he also benefitted from a rare mistake by Max Verstappen late in Q3. The Red Bull ace, who has already been crowned World Champion with five races still to be run, was pushing hard on his final flying lap but overstepped track limits at Turn 19. So, while he crossed the line with the session’s fastest time unofficially, it was quickly deleted by the stewards for the infraction, plunging him back down the order based on his earlier official time. Unable to try again, Verstappen was eventually relegated to a P6 start for Sunday’s Grand Prix, an unenviable position even for the three-time champ on a circuit where no driver has won from below the front row.

That last, somewhat curious statistic must certainly cheer Leclerc, who is still seeking his first win of 2023, and it certainly also heartened McLaren’s Lando Norris, who ran a nice clean quali and slotted in across from Leclerc in P2, 0.13-seconds off the Monegasque’s pole-setting pace. Lewis Hamilton was also in the mix on a track where he always seems to thrive, wrestling his Mercedes to the third fastest Q3 lap, while teammate George Russell earned P5 on the grid by besting Verstappen’s previously set time. Leclerc’s Ferrari teammate Carlos Sainz split the Silver Arrows in P5 and the Alpines of Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon came home P7 and P8 respectively. Sergio Perez continued his recent slump in the second Red Bull and bewilderingly could only manage the ninth fastest time. Likewise, Oliver Piastri was not close to McLaren teammate Norris’s pace a fortnight after beating him out for P2 in the Qatar GP. Starting in P10, the talented young Aussie will have his work cut out for him to get back on the podium come race day in Austin.

Most significantly outside the top 10 qualifiers, Aston Martin’s second-half slide continued, as new “upgrades” for this weekend proved to be duds due to problems getting the cars on track in the only pre-qualifying practice session earlier in the day. Fernando Alonso failed to get to Q3 for the first time this year and was unceremoniously knocked out in Q1, along with troubled teammate Lance Stroll. Alonso will start the race a lowly P17 and Stroll, who is facing heaps of criticism for shoving his physio during qualifying in Qatar, will start P19. That leaves Aston Martin praying for at least some points from the Saturday Sprint, as they feel soaring McLaren’s hot breath on their necks for P4 in the Constructors’ Championship.

Verstappen recovers from botched pit stop to overtake Hamilton for victory at COTA, Perez P4 delivering Constructors’ title to Red Bull; Leclerc fights way from P12 start to P3 but pole-sitting Sainz out after Lap 1, Turn 1 collision on another mixed day for Ferrari

On an emotional and exhilarating Sunday deep in the heart of Texas, Red Bull ace Max Verstappen’s dream season continued. Two weeks after being crowned Formula 1 champ at soggy Suzuka in Japan and only a day after the death of team Red Bull’s owner, Dietrich Mateschitz, Verstappen survived a brutally slow pit stop on Lap 36 of the 56-lap United States Grand Prix and proceeded to use all his skill and the significant advantage of the peerless RB18 chassis to hunt down Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton and earn victory at the Circuit of the Americas. Amidst blustery conditions that played havoc with the highly aero-sensitive F1 machinery, Verstappen somehow turned around the deficit to Hamilton caused by being stationary for an excruciating 11-seconds with a stuck left front tire and catch and pass the seven-time English champion in a ding dong battle between two of the best to ever drive in Formula 1. Verstappen executed his overtake through the most sinuous parts of this beautiful, purpose-built race track on Lap 50, denying Hamilton the opportunity of his first win of 2022 in the process. While Lewis was able to stay close for a few laps afterwards, his Silver Arrow was no match for the fleet Red Bull in the Dutch master’s hands. And despite the uncharacteristic failure to execute by the usually superb Red Bull mechanics, when Verstappen was finally able to pull away he was on the better performing Medium Pirelli tires while Hamilton was saddled with Hards, which simply could not maintain performance as the laps wound down on a day when degradation was less than initially feared.

Verstappen’s victory was not only his record-tying thirteenth of the season but, along with teammate Sergio Perez’s solid P4 finish, gave Red Bull their first Constructors’ title since 2013. It was a fitting farewell to the late Mateschitz, whose vast resources and marketing savvy took a energy drink company and made it synonymous with excellence in motorsports. Red Bull’s team championship, inevitable as it was, came at the expense of Ferrari, who had yet another very mixed day at the track. With Charles Leclerc relegated to a P12 start on the grid after taking engine component penalties, the Scuderia’s hopes that pole-sitting Carlos Sainz might sprint away to the win were quickly dashed when the Spaniard first had a slow getaway from the line, allowing Verstappen to overtake him almost immediately, and then came into contact with the second Mercedes of George Russell while trying to maintain his position going into Turn 1 at the top of the hill. Sainz trundled to the pits but the damage was terminal and Ferrari were immediately down to a one-car team against the might of the Red Bull duo.

Leclerc drove admirably, though, and also benefitted from a cheap pit stop under the Safety Car on Lap 18 necessitated when the Alfa Romeo of Valtteri Bottas was beached in Turn 19. That gave the Monegasque track position and he reemerged in fourth place, a whopping eight spots ahead of his start. After another, longer Safety Car due to a hairy crash on Lap 22 between the semi-airborne Alpine of Fernando Alonso and the smashed to bits Aston Martin of Lance Stroll, Leclerc was able to pull up to the gearbox of the P3 Perez when racing resumed and then dispatch the Mexican stalwart on Lap 30. Fleeting dreams of victory may have flashed before his eyes, but even after Verstappen’s messy pit stop and with Leclerc fighting tooth and nail with the Red Bull for multiple laps, Verstappen was able to relegate Leclerc to third by Lap 39 and on his way to his tete a tete with Hamilton. That’s where the lone surviving Ferrari would finish, making it another day of seriously mixed emotions for the fabled Scuderia from Maranello, a sensation they’ve had all too often this season.

While Hamilton was denied that long sought after victory, his second place was still encouraging at the American circuit he has come to love and he drove a stirring race even if he couldn’t quite match the pace of Verstappen. Russell also scored good points for the Merc team, overcoming a 5-second penalty for the contact with Sainz to still finish a solid P5. Of particular note, Alonso’s Alpine somehow survived his up and down shunt with future teammate Stroll to finish the race in a rather remarkable P7. However, the veteran two-time champ was penalized post-race after protests by the Haas team about the state of his car. Alonso plunged out of the points with that harsh 30-second penalty, although the team are appealing the ruling.

The next race is in but a week’s time as we head south of the border down Mexico way to Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez for the high octane, high altitude Mexican GP. Sainz pips Leclerc for pole but engine penalties shuffle grid at COTA; Verstappen third fastest in Texas

On a race weekend overshadowed by the death of legendary Red Bull owner Dietrich Mateschitz, Saturday qualifying for Sunday’s United States Grand Prix carried on nonetheless. At the beautiful, flowing Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas the track ramped up in the late afternoon Q3 session and it was Ferrari who got the most from their machines as the fierce Texas heat receded. Carlos Sainz pipped his more heralded teammate Charles Leclerc by a mere .065-seconds. The Spaniard earned his second career F1 pole as the checkers flew in the final quali round and also bettered both the Red Bulls of newly minted 2022 champion Max Verstappen and his ace wingman Sergio Perez, who could do no better than P3 and P4 respectively. Further down the pylon, Lewis Hamilton once again out-qualified his young Mercedes teammate George Russell, P5 to P6. However, as happens all too frequently in F1, engine penalties will scramble the grid for the GP, most notably a 10-place grid drop to Leclerc, which will push the Monegasque down to a P12 starting spot and a 5-place penalty for Perez that will drop the Mexican pilot down to ninth on the grid. That means that it will be Sainz duking it out with Verstappen going up the steep hill into Turn 1 instead of his Scuderia stablemate Leclerc, who will be forced to fight his way back up through a crowded midfield and back into relevance.

Verstappen victorious over Hamilton in tense Texas showdown; Perez P3 for surging Red Bull

Sunday’s United States Grand Prix proved an exceptionally tense showdown between this year’s top two championship contenders, Red Bull’s sublime Max Verstappen and the seven-time and current World Champ. Mercedes ace Lewis Hamilton. Running a two man race of their own far ahead of the rest of the field, Verstappen prevailed to take the win at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas in a welcome return to the USA after a year’s absence due to the COVID pandemic. With the grandstands and grounds of this beautiful, purpose built circuit completely packed with ecstatic fans, Verstappen was able to withstand Hamilton’s best efforts in the waning moments of this 56-lap contest, keeping enough life in his older Pirelli tires to hold off the hard charging Englishman. The Dutch phenom not only claimed victory in the Texas heat but also increased his lead in the Drivers’ Championship to twelve points with just five rounds remaining in the 2021 season. If the supremely talented Verstappen should go on to win his first F1 title, his masterfully poised and consistent effort in America could well be looked back on as the crucial turning point.

With Verstappen starting from pole and Hamilton lining up in P2 on the grid, and both on the Medium Pirelli tires they set their fastest lap in Q2 on as per the rules, Hamilton made a lovely and forceful overtaking maneuver on the opening Lap to take the lead. Bottas victorious in Texas but P2 Hamilton claims sixth Formula 1 Title; Verstappen P3 on bad day for Ferrari

Mercedes’ had another landmark day to punctuate another season full of Silver Arrow excellence. The might German team dominated the United States Grand Prix at Circuit of the Americas on Sunday and took a one-two finish deep in the heart of Texas. While their number two driver Valtteri Bottas rode his pole position and a superior two-stop tire strategy to a dominant win, his teammate Lewis Hamilton came home P2, easily earning enough points to clinch his remarkable sixth F1 Drivers’ Championship. With Bottas the only man left with a minute mathematical shot at this year’s title entering the race, Hamilton put it all on the line in Austin. He committed to a risky one-stop strategy and battled a bumpy and windy race track while declining playing it safe to just come home with the bare minimum points to clinch.

Instead the English bulldog took it to the limit, even dicing with his Finnish wingman and going so far as to push Bottas off the track on lap 51 of this 57-lap contest in a despaired bid to maintain the lead and ring up another championship with a win. In the end, Hamilton could not hold off Bottas’ fresher Medium tires on the same superlative equipment and the Finn was able to get by on Lap 52 and cruise home to victory. But Hamilton did fend off the best attempts of Max Verstappen’s Red Bull to take P2 at the checkers and ring up a remarkable sixth championship, surpassing the great Juan Manual Fangio of Argentina for second all-time. Hamilton trails only Michael Schumacher’s record seven F1 crowns and knowing his personality and relentless pursuit of excellence it will be uppermost in his mind this offseason to match that seventh title next season, especially with major new rules changes looming in 2021. But for now Lewis Hamilton can bask in the glory of achieving what only one other driver in Formula 1 history has ever done before. And team Mercedes should be well satisfied with both their driver lineup and the continued performance of their engine and chassis that has already secured them their own sixth Constructors’ Championship and their sixth in a row to boot. 2018 F1 Grand Prix of the United States — Qualifying results

With championship in sight Hamilton nabs pole at COTA; Vettel qualifies P2 but face 3-spot drop; Raikkonen best Bottas for P3

With his potential fifth Drivers’ World Championship tantalizingly close, Mercedes’ ace Lewis Hamilton did his best to make that illustrious dream come true by setting a new track record lap at the Circuit of the Americas on Saturday to take pole for tomorrow’s United States Grand Prix. As if emerging on the top of the pylon in a very tight and tense qualifying session at COTA was not a favorable enough omen, the English points leader had the double satisfaction of seeing his last remaining title rival, Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel, not only come home runner up to him over 6-tenths behind in P2 but also facing a 3-grid spot penalty for a Red Flag speeding infraction in Friday practice. Once again the German superstar, who is also dreaming of a fifth championship, proved to be his own worst enemy by needlessly picking up a penalty that will make winning in Austin extraordinarily difficult. And trailing Hamilton by a whopping 67 points with only four races to go including tomorrow’s contest Vettel really needs to compete for the win in every remaining GP if he’s to keep his title hopes alive. Vettel will have to start P5 come race day tomorrow and hope that he can somehow surge to the front without making any more mental mistakes that might just seal the deal for Hamilton on Sunday.

Vettel’s outgoing teammate Kimi Raikkonen put in a solid effort to qualify P3, which could enable Ferrari to try to play some games to try and bring Vettel further to the front, especially as Hamilton’s wingman Valtteri Bottas could qualify no better than P4. Look for the Finn to be the meat in a Ferrari sandwich going into the steep uphill Turn 1 here at COTA. Continue reading

Hamilton fastest at COTA pipping Vettel for pole; Bottas P3

In just completed qualifying at the fantastic purpose-built F1 track Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, Mercedes’ ace Lewis Hamilton pipped Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel for pole by a mere 0.24 seconds. Hamilton had been looking the strongest by far in all three qualifying sessions setting track record after track record. But Vettel managed to show the Ferrari’s true pace in his final opportunity. The German 4-time world champ put it all together with time running out in Q3 to vault up to P2 on the grid and give himself a chance to take the fight to Hamilton and keep his own championship aspirations on life support. After Ferrari’s wretched three-race run of self-induced bad luck all Hamilton has to do is win the race and see Vettel finish 6th or lower and the Englishman will win his own fourth F1 title. Vettel showed on Saturday that he intends to make that as difficult as possible.

Vettel’s superb last-minute effort pushed Hamilton’s teammate Valtteri Bottas back to P3, while the Red Bulls of Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen qualified P4 and P6 respectively. Unfortunately for Verstappen, the young Dutchman will have to start from the back of the grid due to a host of penalties for equipment changes on his car. Vettel’s Ferrari stablemate Kimi Raikkonen seemed to regress a bit as qualifying entered its crucial phase, dropping from a front row contender down to no better than a P5 time. The Force Indias of Esteban Ococn and Sergio Perez qualified P7 and P10 respectively and Carlos Sainz willed his factory Renault all the way up to P8 in his maiden drive for the team after making the leap from Toro Rosso. McLaren’s Fernando Alonso was the 9th fastest qualifier, making best use of some new aero upgrades added to his car for this weekend at COTA.

In other F1 news, endurance racer and this year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans overall winner Brendon Hartley came in to replace Sainz at Toro Rosso and put in a creditable effort in his first time back in a single seater in about 6 years. The New Zealander ran P18 in qualifying and will be partnered by a returning Daniil Kvyat for Sunday’s GP, though whether the out-of-favor Russian remains with the team for the next race in Mexico remains highly doubtful.
