On offer here I have a wonderful and uncommon circa early 1970s, all-stainless steel King Seiko ref. 5626-7040 Certified Chronometer Day-Date with rare original & beautiful blue sunburst dial. This watch features the characteristically heavily beveled and angled “Grammar of Design” case of the era, which has also been the inspiration for many modern Grand Seiko designs to this day.
The phrase “bang for your buck” is thrown around a lot these days but this watch is truly that. Priced well under a grand, it’s hard to beat in the vintage watch world in terms of excellence of movement and robustness and build quality, not mention overall attractiveness. This Grand Seiko Chronometer is in honest, well-used Very Good vintage condition, with a case that shows many marks from the years but also features sharp edges & angles and appears unpolished. The handsome original blue sunburst dial is likewise Very Good, with some minor spotting, likely due to galvanic reactions typical of blue dials from this era.
This Grand Seiko also features the highly regarded Chronometer-certified caliber 5626 “Hi-Beat” movement under the hood, boasting both quickset date and rapid day advancements. This high grade movement was fully serviced a few years back and is operating flawlessly.
At 36mm, this early 1970s Grand Seiko is eminently wearable and is also a textbook example of the great Taro Tanaka’s “Grammar of Design” philosophy that he utilized to elevate Seiko into more serious competition with the Swiss. It’s an absolute pleasure to wear, very ergonomic, and that lovely vibrant blue dial never fails to draw the eye. This would make a great first vintage watch for the budding collector or a nice entree into the world of vintage Seiko for the seasoned enthusiast.
